Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with Jasper County Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District and Iowa Corn Growers Association, will host a soil health and cover crop field day at the Jasper County Fair on Tuesday, July 19. The 12-2 p.m. event under the Big Tent at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax is free and open to the public. It will begin with a complimentary lunch.
The protection and improvement of soil are important components of long term agricultural productivity. Cover crops, no-till and strip-till reduce soil erosion and loss of nitrogen and phosphorus from the field, while also working to improve soil health. Together these practices work to build soil organic matter and increase water infiltration and storage capacity improving the ability to tolerate weather extremes.
Speaking at the field day is Alan Wedemeyer, Area 2 NRCS Agronomist. He will lead a discussion on the importance of soil health, as well as lead a slake test demonstration and presentation of the NRCS rainfall simulator. Jasper County NRCS district conservationist, Curt Donohue, and soil conservationist, Holly Giombi will offer information on best practices and resources available to help improve soil health in your system.
The field day will be held at the Big Tent at the Jasper County Fairgrounds, 359 N Walnut St, Colfax. The field day is free and open to the public, but reservations are suggested to ensure adequate space and food. Contact Jasper County NRCS at 641-792-4116 ext. 3.
