Seasonal Fuel is Here!

Winter came early this year, and the need for seasonal fuel did too! Key Cooperative has been planning ahead to greatly reduce your chances of having a fuel-related issue due to weather. If you haven’t done the same yet, you could be in a world of trouble soon, if not already.

Your standard #2 diesel fuel has an average cloud point of 14 degrees. That’s when your fuel starts to look cloudy and thick. Not far below that, it will start to plug your fuel filters. Chemical fuel additives that reduce the formation of wax crystals need to be added before those crystals begin to form, typically 10 degrees above that cloud point. Which means we need to start thinking about treating your fuel when it gets to 24 degrees outside. Historically we’ve seen a gradual cool down in December, giving us enough time to get everything blended. This year, the cold set in a little earlier, and so did the demand for winterized fuel. The sudden and earlier time frame of that demand has put stress on the supply of #1 diesel fuel in the state of Iowa and made it more difficult to acquire.

Key Cooperative began blending a cold-flow additive in our Cenex® premium diesel fuels at all our 24-Hour Fuel Station locations in November. This should lower the operability of the fuel from 14 degrees to 0 degrees. Around Thanksgiving, we started adding 30 percent #1 diesel fuel to our cold-flow additive which brings our fuel down to -10 degrees for weatherability. This blending occurs at the terminal where we pick up our fuel and is precisely measured and blended with Cenex’s premium additive package. Key Cooperative stops blending soy-based biodiesel at the beginning of October and does not blend any bio-diesel content into our winter blends of fuel. We will continue to offer these blended winter diesel products till spring when we start to see temperatures consistently above freezing.

Key Cooperative offers these pre-blended winter diesel products at all our fuel stations in both clear and dyed diesel options. We also offer winter diesel for delivery as requested when orders are placed.

If you’d like to know more about our blended winter diesel products or make sure you’re getting these products delivered this winter, please call the Key Energy Department at 800-469-1040.
